With daily shipments of more than 3.5 million packages, FedEx Ground understands better than most how important it is to be able to deliver what you say you will -- and on time. So when FedEx acquired RPS in 1998 to make its foray into ground shipping, they knew they needed to improve the efficiency of the hub system to support their growth plan for this new business line. The aggressive, $1.2 billion plan that began in 2002 would involve 12 new hubs. FedEx was going to need a capable architectural and engineering partner to design these new hubs.

Every good relationship takes time to develop. Our relationship with Fedex Ground started with a small project for the Atlanta hub. Next we were asked to correct some issues on the Memphis hub. Our responsiveness and demonstrated capabilities on previous projects lead to an opportunity to propose on the new hub design prototype. The rest, as they say, is history.

Pickering was selected to develop the next generation "Trident Hub" prototype for the 500,000 square foot distribution facility, complementary buildings - maintenance garage, truck wash, recruiting and security - and surrounding site features, including employee parking, tractor parking and staging areas. And then we hit the ground running -- to Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, Kansas, Ohio and Oregon. Every project presented unique challenges, from meeting strict local and state building codes that required creative workarounds, to siting one hub successfully around protected wetlands and another within a high seismic area.

When the project concluded in 2010, Pickering had not only developed the design prototype, but had been involved in all but one of the new hubs. Over the years, Pickering has provided design services for renovations and additions to numerous other hub facilities. Though the hub expansion project has come to an end, our relationships endure. We still get calls for advice and feedback from our project partners who know we always deliver.
