Chances are you've been Krogering recently. As one of the nation's largest grocery store chains, Kroger and its many banners including Dillons, King Soopers, and City Markets, are household names for most anyone who lives in one of the 31 states in which they operate. But the next time you grab a shopping cart and head down those well-configured aisles, maybe you'll think a little differently about what it takes to keep the produce well-watered, the meat at just the right temperature, and the frozen foods frozen.

One-stop shopping.

As Kroger has expanded store footprints to include things like fuel centers, drive-thru pharmacies, and coffee shops to provide customers a one-stop shopping experience, Pickering has expanded its relationship with Kroger to provide a similar benefit. We currently provide full design services (survey, civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, energy management, and plumbing) on some of Kroger's largest projects in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kansas and Colorado. We've designed new stores and done major expansions. We've relocated utilities and negotiated a myriad of local codes. We've even completely renovated stores, inside and out, while keeping the store open for business. Over the last decade, we've worked with more than 100 stores across the country.

Though there is some standardization across plans, each new store brings an opportunity for something unique -- whether it is designing a facade to fit with a community's architectural standards, incorporating the latest energy efficiency concept, or working as liaison between Kroger and local and state authorities to understand codes and obtain approvals. Expansions provide their own unique challenges, particularly with the utility relocation and extensive phasing that is required.

Supermarkets are one of the largest users of energy by building type and much goes on behind the scenes to support operations. A typical 100,000 square foot store is filled with thousands of pieces of equipment for food preparation, refrigeration, storage and cleaning. Each piece of equipment has unique mechanical, electrical and plumbing requirements which often change continually during the design process. Pickering provides meticulous engineering documents to accommodate each store's unique configuration.

To support Kroger's efforts in the area of sustainable design, Pickering has developed an energy model that incorporates the building envelope and all mechanical systems. From more efficient HVAC systems, to lighting controls, and extensive use of natural light, Pickering is helping Kroger reach new heights in sustainability -- and profitability.
