With production capacity exceeding 26 million tons, Nucor is the largest steel producer in the country and one of the largest recyclers in the world. As a pioneer in their industry, Nucor uses electric arc furnaces and mini-mills instead of more traditional blast furnaces to produce a wide range of steel products.
In 2006, expansion work began on Nucor's Memphis plant, one of four Birmingham Steel facilities they had acquired in 2002 and selected because of the growing automobile industry in the southeast. Nucor was aggressively recruited by the Memphis Chamber because of their track record in attracting additional companies with a need for the raw materials they produce. With a capacity to produce up to 850,000 tons per year, Nucor's Memphis plant began production of carbon steel in special bar quality rounds and round cornered squares in 2008.
Pickering began partnering with Nucor in 2006 when they acquired land adjacent to their existing plant for the expansion. Pickering provided a variety of surveying services and consulted with Nucor's legal staff to work through issues concerning easements that encumbered the property.

Once the expansion began, Pickering worked closely with both the engineering and maintenance divisions of Nucor to provide consultation and design services for a variety of civil, structural and electrical work. From site planning, to the analysis and design of a variety of foundation elements, to the design of access platforms, walkways and stairways - more than 100 individual tasks have been performed by Pickering as Nucor has continued to expand and refine the layout of their plant.
