Well-Managed Environmental Team Keeps Regional Retail Mega-Deal on Course
Issue: Less than one month before its scheduled multi-million dollar purchase of an eight-store, Memphis-area retail operation, Schnuck's needed accurate environmental assessments and highly responsive service. The St. Louis-based grocery chain operator also asked for EPA compliance audits for five area fuel centers as part of the scope of work.
Approach: We rolled our team into action. We generated accurate and detailed Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) reports within two weeks. With only minimal revisions necessary, Pickering submitted the final reports in time to keep the deal on schedule.
Tasks:
- Phase I ESA activities included:
- In-depth interviews with owners, managers, and regulatory officials
- Equipment inspections for UST, pumps, and CMS
- Operational policy and record-keeping reviews
- Phase II activities included:
- Subsurface investigations undertaken at five facilities
- Exploratory borings provided site soils and groundwater samples
- Evaluations found no significant petroleum or volatile compound contamination
Project Timeline: Less than one month
Result: Based on our information, Schnuck's completed its purchase of Memphis-area facilities. Currently, Pickering maintains and assists the client with managing ten Schnuck's fuel centers.
