University of Tennessee Dormitory Safely Removed
Issue: The University of Tennessee Campus located in Martin, Tennessee had a "dated" 80,000 square-foot Austin Peay dormitory that was scheduled for demolition. The demolition was needed to make way for a new dormitory that would meet the current and future needs of the University. In order to demolish the structure, an asbestos and lead-based paint inspection needed to be performed on the structure. Any materials identified during the inspection process would then be designed for removal prior to demolition.
Approach: Pickering conducted a comprehensive asbestos and lead-based paint survey of all interior and exterior spaces at the Austin Peay Dormitory. A total of two teams of state certified asbestos/lead inspectors conducted the work over a two-week period. Bulk samples were collected of suspect ACM and sent to a NVLAP certified laboratory for analysis. XRF testing was also performed of all painted/coated materials in the structure. At the completion of the testing, a comprehensive report of findings was prepared and delivered to the client. After consulting with the University and appropriate TDEC Departments, a comprehensive abatement design plan was developed to prepare the structure for demolition.
Tasks: On this assignment, our activities included:
- Asbestos bulk sampling and analysis
- XRF paint testing
- AutoCAD Drawings
- Comprehensive report preparation
- Abatement design services
- Construction management services
- Asbestos air monitoring services
Project Construction Costs: $27,500
Project Timeline: August 2003-March 2004
Result: The findings of the inspection found a significant amount of asbestos materials in the structure. Since this building was slated for demolition, these materials had to be removed prior to demolition activity. Pickering prepared a comprehensive plan to remove the materials, conducted design bid services and worked as the Owner's Representative to ensure the work was performed as designed. It should be noted that this project was completed on time with no change orders to the contract.
