Facility Move Kicks Off a Host of Environmental Initiatives
Issue: Stateside Steel & Wire, LLC was purchased by Jamieson Manufacturing Co. and made the move across the river to West Memphis, Arkansas. After starting up, ventilation issues associated with the galvanizing process prompted the call to Pickering. After sitting down at Stateside, Pickering identified a number of other environmental issues needing attention.
Approach: Pickering first helped Stateside put out some "fires" such as determining employee exposure and preparing an air permit application. Then, Pickering helped Stateside identify other areas were they would need to take additional steps in establishing regulatory compliant programs.
Tasks: Pickering performed the following tasks:
- Performed exposure monitoring of employees for HCl, zinc and particulate matter
- While employee exposure monitoring did not exceed any OSHA standards, Pickering made recommendations of ways to increase ventilation in the galvanizing area.
- These modifications resulted in a marked reduction in pollutant exposure.
- Performed exposure monitoring of employees which indicated hearing protection is required at all areas of the plant.
- Prepared an air permit application to cover emissions of HCl and zinc fume particulate
- Assisted in preparing a response to an OSHA complaint; we found no basis for the complaint.
- Prepared stormwater NOI and associated Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).
- Performed a Community Right to Know analysis and submitted MSDS Sheets and Tier II reports to local responders and determined that TRI reporting was not necessary.
- Developed an Environmental Health and Safety Plan for the facility.
Result: Stateside Steel & Wire has documentation to show that employees are not adversely exposed to airborne HCl, zinc or particles. Stateside also maintains a minor source air permit, a general stormwater permit, and an updated SWPPP plan. Stateside is also compliant with Community Right to Know regulations and operates using a custom current Environmental Health and Safety Plan.
