Smith & Nephew, Inc. - Oxinium Bldg.

Pickering provided architectural/engineering (electrical and mechanical) services for a production facility of flag ship product for the orthopedic division of Smith & Nephew.

Architecture:
The project included reconfiguration of a 105,000 S.F. warehousing building for use as a manufacturing facility of surgical implant joints, and 29,000 S.F. of the building remained as office space. Half of the 76,000 S.F. high-bay warehouse space was retrofitted into manufacturing space (with the other half for future manufacturing use). A separation wall was designed between the two spaces in the warehouse. A unique requirement of the manufacturing space is that the product cannot come in contact with water.

Mechanical/Plumbing/Fire Protection:
The sprinkler system was disabled. Underfloor domestic water lines were installed as flexible tubing inside sleeves to facilitate replacement. A 450-ton variable-flow chilled water system and a 2 MMBTU variable-flow hot water system serve variable-volume AHUs. Two 42,000 CFM AHUs serve the manufacturing space. (3) Class 100,000 Clean Rooms are served by dedicated units with HEPA filters, reheat, and humidifiers. There is a 70-ton chiller for winter-time use. The chiller Plant is expandable to 1,350 tons. Seismic restraint was installed to hospital standards.

Structural:
Pickering performed an upgrade to meet IBC 2000 Seismic requirements. An intermediate super structure was designed and placed at 20 feet above the floor slab to serve as support for the mechanical equipment, and as a seismic support element.

Electrical:
This involved providing new electrical services and placement of power distribution equipment to robotic metal finishing equipment, metal treatment equipment, metals cleaning lab, quality assurance lab and administrative areas.
