C-5 Hangar Package Tennessee Air National Guard 164th Airlift Wing

The Tennessee Air National Guard 164th Airlift Wing based at Memphis International Airport has been assigned a new mission: flying and maintaining C-5 transport aircrafts. The new mission entails the relocation of the existing base in a different location at the airport. In conjunction with the Memphis International Airport, the new base facility includes extensive site preparation to receive a new apron and taxiways, three specialized hangars with associated shops to support the C5 program, and related administrative operations for the base.

The Corrosion Control Hangar encompasses an area of 85,700 gross SF with a construction cost of $22 million. This Hangar has environments requiring explosion proof equipment in shops for minor repair of the aircraft exterior paint. This part of the building houses Administrative and Training spaces and the Sheet Metal Repair Shop with Bead Blast Room and Paint Booth.

The Fuel Cell Hangar encompasses an area of 80,700 gross SF with a construction cost of $20 million. This Hangar has an environment classified “Hazardous” (for explosive vapors) for in-place inspection and repair of the aircraft fuel tanks. This part of the building also contains Administrative and Training spaces and the Fuel Cell Repair Shop.

The Maintenance Hangar comprises an area of 164,800 gross SF with a construction cost of $33 million. This Hangar will provide an environmentally controlled, fully enclosed hangar with associated areas to support scheduled and unscheduled maintenance as well as specialized maintenance activities. These facilities include: Aircraft Services Bay, AMS (Flightline) Offices, NDI Shop, Avionics Shop, Machine Shop, Structural/Sheet Metal Shop, Survival Equipment Shop, Engine Shop, Hydraulic Shop, Aero Repair (Wheel and Tire) Shop, and Electrical / Environmental Shop. Functions include fabrication and repair of aerospace systems, survival and reclamation operations, non-destructive inspections, maintenance on serviceable equipment, engine disassembly, inspection, repair and replacement, and weapons systems management operation.

Pickering complied with UFC-010-01, "DOD Minimum Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings" with regard to location and screening of exterior air conditioning units, power generators, and other building equipment. We also complied with the criteria regarding proper location of outside air intakes. The mass notification system allows threat response information to be distributed.

Teaming with Frankfurt Short Bruza (FSB), Pickering provided electrical, mechanical (HVAC), plumbing and fire protection design for these hangars, as well as assisting with the Type C services.
