FedEx/TNANG Apron

The Tennessee Air National Guard 164th Airlift Wing is currently based on Democrat Road at Memphis International Airport, just west of the FedEx superhub. Recently TANG was assigned a new mission – that of flying and maintaining C 5 Galaxy transport aircraft. In August 2004, an agreement was reached between FedEx and TANG that the Air Guard would relocate to a new base at (the southeast corner of Memphis International Airport and FedEx would occupy the vacated existing TANG facility. Pickering prepared the Master Plan for the TANG apron conversion to FedEx cargo gates.

Located on a part of the vacated TANG facility is an undeveloped (green field) site that Pickering converted to an airfield sized for six (6) wide-body cargo aircraft. Pickering provided full design services for the project, which included field surveys and a geotechnical investigation. The site, bordered by Taxiway Charlie on the west, the existing TANG facility on the north and east, and FedEx and Taxiway Sierra on the south, is the first project in which FedEx will utilize the space previously leased by the Air Guard.

The project included approximately 70,000 Square Yards of concrete pavement, including asphalt drainage layer and cement-treated aggregate base. The project also included a full complement of FedEx cargo gate utilities including lighting, communications, provisions for 400 HZ power and storm warning systems. The work included providing a connection to a new underground jet fuel distribution main, auxiliary connection to the existing main and distribution piping loop with subgrade hydrants and compressed air system. Also included were extensive drainage designs, including bid alternates for a major crossing drainage conveyance.
