I-55/MS 463 Interchange

I-55 463 The project consisted of conceptual, preliminary and final right-of-way designs and construction plans for an urban interchange on I-55 just north of Jackson, MS in Madison County. This interchange is the first single-point urban diamond type interchange (SPUI) consisting of grade-separation with dual left turns to be designed in the State of Mississippi.

The project design included widening approximately three kilometers of I-55, one kilometer of the crossroad (MS 463) and new ramps. Design included:

Maintenance of traffic was a major consideration in the design of this interchange. Multiple phases were required to coordinate construction in order to maintain all traffic movements throughout the entire construction process.

One of the most significant challenges of this project was to design its bow-tie shape. Curved girders were used to support the shape and add to the aesthetic appeal of the bridge. In addition to the girders, brick facades were used on the bridge to add to aesthetic appeal and complement the surrounding community.

The project also included extensive architectural treatments to ensure an aesthetically pleasing design. Estimated construction cost $25 million.
